COWBOYS CONTRIBUTE BIG IN ALL CONFERENCE FOOTBALL WIN!

December 10, 2006 (Mission Viejo) – Seven Junior Pee Wee football players from the Mission Viejo Cowboys took advantage of the privilege of playing in the 19th Annual Orange County Junior All American (OCJAAF) All Conference Game by posting a thrilling 14-12 Red vs. Blue victory at Rowland Heights High School Saturday.

The OCJAAF Red squad, representing primarily Orange County teams, kicked off to the Blue squad to begin the contest and on the first play from scrimmage Tyler Argy (Fountain Valley) pounced on a Blue fumble to give Red the ball. On the second Red offensive play quarterback Acusio Bivona (Mission Viejo) handed the ball off to running back Sydney Reynolds (Mission Viejo) who broke through the left side for a 30 yard touchdown, but the play was called back due to a procedure penalty. The Blue squad, representing primarily Los Angeles County teams, scored on the ensuing drive with a 1 yard plunge. Reynolds and Ronald Harris (Mission Viejo) broke up a pass attempt for the extra point and the score was 6-0 Blue.

In the second quarter Reynolds sped for 40 yards on a reverse, but the Red drive stalled at the 20 yard line. Red linebacker, Akili Gamba (Mission Viejo), had consecutive tackles for loss as the Red defense stepped up the pressure. On the last play of the half the Blue team went for it all and Reynolds made them pay by intercepting the pass and zigzagging 50 yards for a Red touchdown. The extra point kick attempt was fumbled and the halftime score was 6-6.

The third quarter started off with a 70 yard scamper by a Blue running back which set up an 8 yard touchdown run. Harris and Gamba stuffed the off-tackle attempt for extra point and Blue was up 12-6. Gamba continued his tough play on the next Red offensive series as he took a handoff on a dive play and broke six tackles on a bruising, tone-setting run. Center Aaron Burela (Mission Viejo), Bivona, Gamba, Reynolds and the Red offense continued on a 12 play drive that ate up much of the 3rd quarter and went into the 4th with the drive stalling at the Blue 20 yard line. On the next play Robert Reyes (Fountain Valley) recovered a Blue fumble at the 10 yard line and the Red squad was in business. On the second play of the short drive quarterback Alek Torgersen (Fountain Valley) rolled out and threw a beautiful touchdown pass to Jeffrey Carlyle (Newport Beach) which tied the score at 12-12. A perfect snap by Dehjon Hurd (Corona) and hold by Carlyle led to a booming extra point kick by Kyle Reilly (Dana Point) which gave the Red team a 14-12 lead with 3:37 left in the game. The Red defense shut down the Blue offense with a four and out and Bivona ran the clock out with two kneel downs to end the game as the ecstatic Red players jumped and celebrated on the sidelines with a water shower for Head Coach Robin Bivona (Mission Viejo). The victory ended an 8 year drought for the Junior Pee Wee Red All Conference team.

Reynolds finished with 117 yards rushing and Torgersen was 3 of 5 passing for 45 yards. Carlyle had two receptions for 25 yards and Khidhar Fields (Irvine) added a catch for 20 yards. The Red defense, coordinated by Sonny Reynolds (Mission Viejo), held the speedy Blue team to 142 total yards. The Red offense was coordinated by Hector Martinez (Fountain Valley) and put up 202 yards. Other Mission Viejo Cowboys contributors included Michael Mackesy, and Tanner Murphey. The Blue All Conference team was coached by Carson.
